About KidKaptain Write

KidKaptain Write is a simple communication tool designed to help a person type or handwrite a short message, have it spoken aloud, and optionally translate it between English, Spanish, and Simplified Chinese.

What KidKaptain Write does not require

Typed and handwritten messages

Typed and handwritten messages stay in the browser while the user is using the app. Handwriting is used only on the on-screen writing area and is not uploaded by KidKaptain Write.

Translation

Translation is optional. When the user taps Translate, the typed text is sent through a secure server-side function to Google Cloud Translation so a translated version can be returned to the screen. KidKaptain Write does not intentionally save the translated message.

Speech

Text-to-speech uses the speech voices available through the user's browser or device. KidKaptain Write does not record the user's voice.

Local settings

The selected language may be remembered locally on the device so the app can open in the user's preferred language. The progressive web app may also cache its own files so the basic communication features can continue to work more reliably.

Third-party services

The website is hosted using Netlify, and optional translations are processed using Google Cloud Translation. Those services may process technical information needed to provide and secure their services under their own privacy practices.

Children and families

KidKaptain Write is designed to be simple enough for children and other people who may benefit from communication support. It does not require a child to create an account or submit a name, email address, or profile. Parents and caregivers can decide whether to use the optional online translation feature.

KidKaptain Write is a communication aid and is not a substitute for medical, speech-language, educational, or emergency services.
